The Yard started out as a group of friends and a logo. The name came from an old station yard where we used to hang out, skate, kick a ball and talk about what was on our minds - 'see you at the yard at six'. We figured most people had a place like that when they were growing up. We used the logo as a way of identifying ourselves as a crew, stencilling it on everything we owned from surfboards and skateboards to cars and t-shirts. We stuck homemade stickers and stencils on the routes between home and the beach, the pub, in towns we visited and chairlifts in the mountains. We basically stuck it anywhere we could. Since then we've had a few ups and downs and sold a load of clothes to friends, their friends and their friends' friends. We've sponsored world class surfers and musicians, and put on some amazing parties for The Yard extended family. As we know fashion is not the most ethical industry. At The Yard we do all we can to source ethical and environmentally sound production and practice. Our clothing is sourced from suppliers who are members of the Fair Wear Foundation, an organisation which exists to promote fair labour conditions in the garment industry. It is our strong belief that great looking, high quality clothing and ethical, environmentally safe production are not mutually exclusive. Ethics in fashion are fast becoming normal practice, rightfully so. These things are essential and it is everybody's responsibility to move towards sustainability. The Yard. |
